Schema Therapy is a psychotherapeutic approach developed by Dr. Jeffrey Young and his collaborators in the late 1990s. This effective model based on rigorous scientific evidence was created to help patients who have different personality disorders and the ones who are refractory to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Dr. Young realized that these patients had Early Maladaptive Schemas, Dysfunctional Modes and Dysfunctional Coping Modes that interfered with their lives and clinical progress. Often times these individuals did prior therapies (usually based on other clinical models) and felt these therapies had “stalled” causing them dissatisfaction, frustration and feelings of hopelessness.
